Sonja Anders was born in 1965 in Hamburg. After completing a degree in German literature there, she began working as a dramaturg at Kampnagel, a venue for the performing arts in Hamburg. Starting in 1990 Anders was an assistant dramaturg at the Stuttgart State Theatre under the direction of Friedrich Schirmer. Here she collaborated with directors such as Martin Kusej and Christoph Loy.
From 2000 to 2009, Anders worked as a dramaturg at the Thalia Theater Hamburg; from the 2005/2006 season onwards she was the theatre’s chief dramaturg. At the Thalia she worked regularly with directors Stephan Kimmig, Martin Kusej, Michael Thalheimer and Nicolas Stemann. Since the start of the 2009/2010 season Sonja Anders has been Chief Dramaturg and Deputy Artistic Director at the Deutsches Theater Berlin.
