WATERFRONT WASTELAND MEDEA MATERIAL LANDSCAPE WITH ARGONAUTS | Mommsen’s Block (VERKOMMENES UFER MEDEAMATERIAL LANDSCHAFT MIT ARGONAUTEN | Mommsens Block)

by Heiner Müller

Dimiter Gotscheff engages with Heiner Müller – as he has time and time again, over many years. In this production, Gotscheff interweaves Müller’s trypticon Waterfront Wasteland/Medea Material/Landscape with Argonauts (1982) with his “performance text” Mommen’s Block (1993). The resulting hybrid bores deep into our society’s buried realms of experience, taps into its explosive flow of energy, encounters the ghostly presence known as history, and tries to move beyond the antitheses which inform our worldview. This is theatre as archaeology, as the discovery of an unknown landscape. It’s confronting the monstrous while, at the same time, being haunted by the tormenting thought that there’s absolutely no meaning to it all. How do you keep on writing when your revulsion of the world around you becomes overwhelming?
