Bernd Stempel was born in Berlin and studied there at the East German state acting school (now known as the Ernst Busch School for Performing Arts). From 1979 to 1989 he performed at the State Theatre in Halle, starring in over 50 productions. Under the direction of Peter Sodann, Stempel was one of the cofounders of Halle’s New Theatre, where he also made his directing debut with Athol Fugard’s The Island and Karl Valentin’s Das Grossfeuer (The Inferno). Since 1989 Stempel has been a member of the Deutsches Theater ensemble. To date he has appeared in some 80 productions, staged by such illustrious names as Friedo Solter, Heiner Müller, Thomas Langhoff, Lars Norén, Michael Thalheimer, Peter Zadek, Robert Wilson, Andreas Kriegenburg and Sabine Auf der Heyde. Stempel figured prominently in Thomas Ostermeier’s productions during the period the director headed the Deutsches Theater’s »Baracke« (»Barracks«) stage. He appeared in Ostermeier’s stagings of Nicky Silver’s Fat Men in Skirts, Mark Ravenhill’s Shopping and Fucking and Richard Dresser’s Below the Belt. Stempel also worked closely with Jürgen Gosch, and still performs in the director’s acclaimed staging of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya.
