The Year of Magical Thinking (Das Jahr magischen Denkens)

A play by Joan Didion based on her memories

German translation by Terence French

It’s 2003: Married writers Joan Didion and John Gregory Dunne have just returned home from a hospital visit to their daughter. After contracting pneumonia Quintana has gone into septic shock and is lying in intensive care.  In mid-conversation -- while his wife is preparing dinner – Dunne suffers a heart attack and dies. The couple’s close professional and personal relationship, which spanned four decades, is over in a heartbeat…After spending nine months in a state of shock, Joan Didion starts to write again. Her very life depends on this attempt to comprehend the incomprehensible. With stunning candour she relates her experiences in a way that’s self-critical, self-ironic and utterly devoid of sentimentality. Didion describes her denial strategies, her obsession with keeping everything under control, as well as the little tricks or “magical thinking” she employs to avoid the incontrovertible reality of her husband’s death. Barbara Schnitzler stars in Joan Didion’s stage adaptation of her gripping memoir: “The Year of Magical Thinking.”
