Anna Bergmann

Anna Bergmann was born in 1978 in Stendal. After completing a degree in theatre studies, philosophy and English literature at the Freie Universität Berlin, she studied directing at the University of Performing Arts Ernst Busch in Berlin. Since 2003 she has worked at many major German theatres. At the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater she directed the German premiere of Sera Moore Williams’ Crash, Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, Breaking the Waves by Lars von Trier and Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina; at the Staatstheater Braunschweig she directed Lessing’s Miss Sara Sampson, Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Treulose based on Ingmar Bergman; at Schauspielhaus Bochum Vicki Baum’s Menschen im Hotel and Lewis Carroll’s Alice; at the Thalia Theater Hamburg Bunbury by Oscar Wilde (invited to the Radikal Jung festival in Munich 2010), at the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin the premieres of Juliane Kann’s Fieber and Radikal by Yassin Musharbash; and at the Volkstheater Munich Eine Unbekannteaus der Seine by Horváth. Anna Bergmann directed the world premiere of Oliver Kluck’s Die Froschfotzenlederfabrik at the Burgtheater Vienna in 2011. The premiere of Ibsen’s The Lady from the Sea followed in September 2013 at the renowned Vienna Akademietheater. In April 2014 she directed Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Stadsteater Malmö. In 2016 she was nominated for the Nestroy Award in the category “Best Director” for her production of Fräulein Julie at Vienna’s Theater in der Josefstadt. In 2009, the pupil of Peter Zadek directed her first opera: Madama Butterfly at the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater. This was followed in 2012 by Weber’s Der Freischütz at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt. Since 2014 she has worked regularly at the Stadsteater Malmö. In Karlsruhe she directed the opera La Bohème and Chekhov’s play The Three Sisters and, in the last season, Antigone. Anna Bergmann has been theatre director at the Staatstheater Karlsruhe since the 2018/19 season. This is her first time working as a director at the Deutsches Theater Berlin, where she is directing Persona by Ingmar Bergman, a coproduction with the Stadsteater Malmö.
