Martin Butzke, born 1974 in Wilhelmshaven, studied acting at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Saarbücken. From 1997 to 2001 he was engaged at the Theater Ingolstadt, where he was awarded the Actor Prize of the Bayerische Theatertage 2001 for the role of Roelle in Fleissers Fegefeuer in Ingolstadt. From 2001 to 2006 he was a member of the ensemble at the Münchner Kammerspiele, from 2006 to 2010 at the Schauspiel Frankfurt. He also played in TV and cinema productions, including Wer wenn nicht wir by Andres Veiel and Jud Süss - Sympathie für den Teufel by Oskar Roehler. Since 2010 he has worked freely with Corinna von Rad, Elias Perrig, Bettina Oberli and several times with Peter Kastenmüller, including in East of Eden (Jenseits von Eden) and The Seventh Seal (Das siebente Siegel) at Theater Basel and in Infinite Jest (Unendlicher Spass) at Hebbel am Ufer Berlin. Martin Butzke has been a permanent member of the Theater Neumarkt ensemble since 2013. There he played Puntila in Peter Kastenmüller's production of Brecht's Herr Puntila und sein Knecht Matti, Krogstad in Ibsen's A Doll's House (Nora. Ein Puppenheim) (Director: Heike M. Goetze), in Himmel (Director: Simone Blattner), Bonnie and Clyde (Director: Wojtek Klemm), Strauss' operetta Die Fledermaus (Director: Friederike Heller) and in Der kalte Hauch des Geldes as well as Good People, both directed by Peter Kastenmüller. Since 2015 he has shown his solo Der Mensch erscheint im Holozän by Max Frisch in Chorgasse. In the 2017/18 season Martin Butzke played in Michel Houellebecq's Submission (Unterwerfung) (directed by Katrin Hentschel), Die Hauptstadt by Robert Menasse (premiered, directed by Tom Kühnel), in his solo project Planet Trillaphon and in The Great Tragedy of Female Power (directed by Pınar Karabulut). In the 2018/19 season he appeared in I Love Dick, Hulla Di Bulla, Panikherz and Der Mensch erscheint im Holozän. Currently he plays in The Life of Vernon Subutex (Das Leben des Vernon Subutex) based on the novel trilogy by Virginie Despentes (director: Peter Kastenmüller) and Entschuldigung (director: Peter Kastenmüller). Entschuldigung is a co-production between the Theater Neumarkt Zurich and the Deutsches Theater Berlin and will be premiered in Berlin at the end of the Autorentheatertage 2019.
