Miss Julie (Fräulein Julie)
after August Strindberg
Love and power, dominance and submission, social status, role expectations and their transgression: August Strindberg's Miss Julie (1889) dissects the complexity and contradictions of gender relations with cool precision. In their adaptation,
Timofey Kulyabin and Roman Dolzhansky have chosen a starting point that is radically different from Strindberg's. By putting the figure of Julie’s fiancé on stage – a character Strindberg only mentions – Kulyabin and Dolzhansky unpack the story of Julie, her employee Jean and his girlfriend Christine as a tale of loneliness, selfishness, greed and betrayal in the age of technological surveillance.
Timofey Kulyabin is the artistic director of the Red Torch Theatre in Novosibirsk and one of the most exciting directors in Russia today.
