Born in Donauwörth in 1968. He studied costume and set design at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. From 2000-2005, Hintermeier was the head of set and costumes for the Schauspielhaus Bochum where he worked with Matthias Hartmann, Jürgen Kruse and Helge Schneider, among others. In 2002, he created the set for Deutschland, deine Lieder (Germany, Your Songs), the opening production of the Ruhrtriennale festival. From 2005-2009, Hintermeier was the chief set designer at the Schauspielhaus Zürich. In 2007, he created the stage for Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Salzburg Festival. He has worked at the Zurich Opera House (Carmen and The Bartered Bride), at the Vienna State Opera on Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of the Mtensk District, at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona on Tiefland (The Lowlands), and at the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St. Petersburg on Kat'a Kabanova and Carmen with Volker Schlöndorff. Since the 2009/10 season, he has had regular engagements at the Burgtheater in Vienna. He has also created stage sets for the Schauspiel Leipzig, Theater Luzern, Theater Oberhausen, Schauspiel Köln, Volkstheater Wien, Neumarkttheater Zürich, Schauspiel Frankfurt and the Staatsschauspiel Dresden. During the 2014/2015 season, he worked for the first time at the Deutsches Theater Berlin on the production of Der Geizige (The Miser), directed by Marin Laberenz.
