Play Strindberg
by Friedrich Dürrenmatt
August Strindberg’s The Dance of Death is the original unhappy marriage drama, one could say. In his reworking, Friedrich Dürrenmatt – a master of the bitter-ironic worldview – wanted to banish its "dynamics of fate and bourgeois demons". So he tightened and condensed the dialogues, divided the text into a twelve-round boxing match and transformed the tragedy of the original into comedy. Alice and Edgar, shortly before their silver wedding anniversary and living very lonely lives, have a real slanging match. Then Alice’s cousin Kurt turns up. What alliances are formed? Who takes sides with whom? A ruthless and funny drama.
