"From my window," Siegfried Lenz wrote, in his explanation of how he was inspired to write this story, "I can see the bright red hull of a fire ship far out in the bay: an orientation point for seafarers, a sort of organic symbol of safety. I try to imagine a fight between unarmed and armed forces on the fire ship."
The plot: A captain on his last voyage takes three shipwrecked gangsters on board – with fatal consequences. Lenz, who died in October 2014, explores a variety of themes in his story: the dichotomy of chaos and order, activity and passivity, individual responsibility and mass violence, and a father’s battle with his son.
