The Garden Of Earthly Delights (Der Garten der Lüste)
by Fiston Mwanza Mujila
‘The garden is the dazzling forest clearing in our dreams. The garden hastens individual prosperity. The garden brings bliss to life and bestows a feeling of timelessness on the soul. The garden will protect us from worldly upheavals. Human salvation is achieved through the garden. Without the garden, I don’t see how we’ll ever reach the end of this long, never-ending tunnel.’
Fiston Mwanza Mujila’s latest play tells vividly, musically and exuberantly of the vision of a garden: a place where all is well and evil does not exist. It is a new world that promises happiness, where honesty and common sense rule, it offers an antidote to the real world, melancholia, madness and megalomania – the vision of a garden counteracting insanity. But if such a place existed, who would be allowed in?
