Thieves (Diebe)
by Dea Loher
Insurance salesman Finn opens his eyes one morning and knows that he never wants to get up again. His sister Linda has seen a wolf and hopes that her almost bankrupt thermal baths will soon stand on the site of a nature preserve. Their father Erwin would just once like to have a normal conversation about the weather or astrology. Monika, a sales clerk in a supermarket has been promised a promotion by her boss – perhaps to run a store in Holland. Thomas, her policeman husband, would come along. Mr and Mrs Schmidt have the feeling they’re being watched – by an animal? The pregnant Mira doesn’t want her unborn child. But Josef, the baby’s father, absolutely wants to have it. Gabi and Rainer are apartment hunting – or perhaps just pretending they are. Ira, an older woman, is missing her husband. He just went out for a walk, didn’t he?
Dea Loher interweaves these individual episodes. The characters encounter one another in different situations and meet again in surprising ways. A dark and yet comic panorama of people of our time emerges -- always peering into the abyss, yet ever hopeful.
Specially commissioned by the Deutsches Theater Berlin
