by Dea Loher
"We’ve been wanting to leave tomorrow for a long while.”
Two couples meet by the shore of Lake Schwarzer See: Cleo and Eddie encounter Else and Johnny. They haven’t seen one another in four years – not since the terrible thing happened. After that, Else and Johnny moved to the city. There he works as a bank manager and she helps run a pawn shop. Cleo and Eddie stayed at Lake Schwarzer See where they operate the ailing brewery. It’s at this place full of memories that the couples once again come face to face. The characters in Dea Loher’s new play are in a perpetual state of limbo. Alienated from their own lives, they’re unable to accept their fate yet incapable of doing anything to change it.
'By Lake Schwarzer See' is the third Dea Loher play that Andreas Kriegenburg has brought to life on the Deutsches Theater stage. His production of 'Thieves' was invited to Berlin’s prestigious Theatertreffen festival and 'The Final Fire’ earned Kriegenburg the 2008 Faust Theatre Prize for Best Director. Dea Loher’s debut novel, 'Bugatti taucht auf' ('Bugatti Surfaces') was nominated for the 2012 German Book Prize.
