Constellations
by Nick Payne
German translation by Corinna Brocher
Marianne is a quantum physicist, Roland is a beekeeper. Their love story could have been quite ordinary – but Marianne’s job determines how the play progresses. Nick Payne develops his dramaturgy following her theory that "in the quantum multiverse, every decision that you make exists in an inconceivably huge ensemble of parallel universes". The most diverse constellations of the relationship are played out: versions in which the two don’t even make it to their first kiss, and those in which they split up, cheat on each other or are faithful. Payne succeeds in raising existential questions about the meaning of life, free will and destiny.
