Premiere November 28, 2015
A woman’s corpse is found with her heart bitten out of her body. Out in the swamp somebody is prowling around at night. According to the legend of the Herzerlfresser (Heart Eater) he needs the hearts of seven girls to deliver him from his own unhappiness. But will this fill the empty space in his own heart? The search for the murderer has the whole town on tenterhooks, until a sudden showdown in broad daylight.
With der herzerlfresser, the Deutsches Theater is presenting a new text by the young Austrian author Ferdinand Schmalz, whose piece dosenfleisch (tinned meat) was selected by the jury of the 2015 Autorentheatertage and premiered as a co-production with the Burgtheater in Vienna.
Ferdinand Schmalz was born in 1985 in Graz, Austria. He worked as an assistant director at the Schauspielhaus in Vienna and the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf. He currently lives in Vienna where he is studying Theatre Studies and Philosophy. In 2014 his first work, am beispiel der butter (taking butter as an example), was premiered at the Schauspiel Leipzig in 2014 and invited to the Mülheim Theatertage. The production of the piece by the Burgtheater Vienna was invited to the Autorentheatertagen 2015 at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. He was named Up-and-Coming Dramatist of the Year by Theater Heute in 2014.
