"I can’t remember anymore. I only remember that there were three – three sisters. I forgot their faces, their voices, but I know for a fact that your father, the General, had three daughters," says Colonel Vershinin during his visit to the house of the three sisters. Following the death of their father, Olga, Masha and Irina live far away from Moscow in a provincial backwater, where their only connection to culture is through the military officers stationed in town. Life has become dull and dreary for them and their brother Andrei. The past haunts them and will continue to haunt them like a nightmare. Because Irina’s suitor, the young officer Nikolai Tuzenbach, whom she finally agreed to marry after a long courtship, has shot himself, and she will be pursued by his memory for as long as she lives. But Irina is by no means the only one who wishes she could start her life all over again...
