Homecoming
"And there I was standing there again, in front of our house, my mother upstairs behind the curtains, and I had to ring for a long time. Home. Being at home, I couldn't stand it even for two days."
Rootlessness was the major theme of Einar Schleef's writing. He was an exile, one for whom working through his relationships with his mother Gertrud and his home town of Sangershausen was a lifelong endeavour. 'Heimkehr' is a choric work of remembrance which speaks of the power of the past, of mothers who are monsters, and the desire to belong. Never return, get over it, flee – until you have your own home which suffocates and consumes you.
