Christopher Rüping

Christopher Rüping, born 1985 in Hanover, first worked as an assistant at the Schauspiel Hannover before beginning his directing studies at the Theaterakademie Hamburg and the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste. During his studies he worked on his first projects at Kampnagel, which were shown at renowned festivals in and outside Germany. Since 2011 Rüping has worked as a freelance director for various stages in German-speaking countries, such as the Deutsches Theater Berlin, the Thalia Theater Hamburg, the Schauspiel Frankfurt and the Schauspielhaus Zürich. In both 2014 and 2015 he was voted Young Director of the Year by the theatre magazine Theater heute. His Stuttgart production The Celebration was also invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 2015, followed by his second invitation to the Theatertreffen in 2018 with his production of Bertolt Brecht's Drums in the Night at the Münchner Kammerspiele, where he has been the in-house director since the 2016/2017 season under the artistic direction of Matthias Lilienthal. Guest performances of his Munich productions of Hamlet and Drums in the Night were shown at guest performances in Tehran, Taipei and St. Petersburg, among others. In the case of J. Robert Oppenheimer is Christopher Rüping's fifth production at the Deutsches Theater Berlin after Surf, Romeo and Juliet, 100 Seconds (what are our lives about) and It Can't Happen Here.
