German translation by Dorothea Tieck
After the battle has been won, the Scottish generals Macbeth and Banquo meet three witches on their way home. Their prophecy: Macbeth will become king and Banquo will father a line of kings. Macbeth fulfils the prophecy by his own actions, supported and encouraged by his wife: he kills King Duncan in his sleep. This murder leads by force to further murders. Driven from one atrocity to the next, the initially soul-searching man turns onto an unscrupulous murderer who desperately tries to escape the exposure of his deeds and hold on to his power.
In Shakespeare’s tragedy, entire moral categories cave in. Certainty disappears and a glimpse into the hazy darkness of human depths opens up. Unbridled greed and apathy abound; madness, power-thirstiness, and panicked ambition. In the end, a deeply human fear determines the tyrannical behaviour – and the rise and fall – of Macbeth.
