Mathias Weibel
Mathias Weibel grew up in Bern, was originally a violinist and is at home in a variety of different music styles. He studied in Bern, Florence and Vienna, and played as a baroque violin specialist in various ensembles such as Capilla Reial de Catalunya, Hespèrion XX and La Folia Madrid. In addition to his teaching position in Zurich, he worked as a guest lecturer and adviser at the Videira School of Music (Santa Catarina, Brazil) and the University of Belo Horizonte. Today he lives in Zurich, where together with the Brazilian singer Luiz Alves da Silva he founded TURICUM, an ensemble specialising in Ibero-American baroque music. Mathias Weibel is a member of the Basel Chamber Orchestra. In addition, he plays Argentine tango and works with Spanish flamenco musicians. Over the years, he has collaborated frequently with the director Thom Luz as a theatre musician, arranger, pianist and general musical director and co-initiator at the Gessnerallee theatre in Zurich, Theater Basel, and the state theatres of Oldenburg, Hanover and Mainz. At the Schauspielhaus Zürich he has worked with the directors Christoph Marthaler and Stefan Pucher, and the choreographer Meg Stuart. With director Jonas Knecht he worked on the productions of Vrenelis Gärtli and Gallus.
