Michael Schweighöfer was born in the eastern German town of Borna. He performed at the Kleist Theatre in Frankfurt an der Oder before joining the Deutsches Theater in 1985. Here he has performed in: Friedo Solter’s staging of The Flies by Jean-Paul Sartre; Thomas Ostermeier’s production of Fat Men in Skirts by Nicky Silver; Armin Petras’ staging of The Just Assassins by Camus, and Andreas Kriegenburg’s production of Before Daybreak by Gerhart Hauptmann. Schweighöfer has also worked frequently with director Frank Castorf. Over the last decade Michael Schweighöfer has often presented his solo performance called Petit Albert. He turned his hand to directing for the world premiere of Oliver Bukowski’s Stand by, staged in the Kammerspiele workshop. For the DT’s Box stage, Schweighöfer directed Auguste Bolte, a tribute to Kurt Schwitters and, in 2008, Juli Zeh’s play Corpus Delicti. Michael Schweighöfer currently plays "Captain" Jack Boyle in Milan Peschel’s production of Juno and the Paycock by Sean O'Casey. He performs in three of Tom Kühnel and Jürgen Kuttner’s productions: the Peter Hacks drama Anxieties and Power, Michael Frayn’s Democracy, and Capitalista, Baby!, based on Ayn Rand’s novel The Fountainhead. Schweighöfer also appears in Michael Thalheimer’s staging of The Weavers by Gerhart Hauptmann.
