"That's he that was Othello; here I am." (Act V, Scene II)
Othello is a respected and successful general in the Venetian army. His reputation is impeccable yet his dark skin brands him as a "foreigner", making him an object of ridicule and rejection. Othello secretly marries the young Desdemona who defies her father's wishes to wed the man she loves. Meanwhile, Othello's ensign Iago is angry that the general has passed him over and made a young soldier named Cassio his lieutenant instead. Driven by hate and a lust for power, Iago spins a deadly web of deceit: he convinces Othello that Desdemona is cheating on him with Cassio. Wild with jealousy and feeling he's been hoodwinked, Othello kills Desdemona. When her innocence is revealed, Othello kills himself.
Jette Steckel was named Best Young Director of 2007 by the critics poll in trade magazine "Theatre heute". In her production of Shakespeare's tragedy, Steckel searches for the stranger, the monster, the animal, the enemy, the man, the woman and the child who are all bound up in the character of Othello. His story probes how identity is comprised and how it can be destroyed.
