It is almost a hundred years ago that Carl Sternheim lost his faith in German social democracy: in his comedy 'Tabula Rasa' (1916) the main protagonist vacillates between class consciousness and profit-making, worker solidarity and playing on the stock market until he finally gives free reign to his radical egotism and leaves all paradoxes behind him.
What was that again: being left-wing? In a post-democratic era characterised by diminishing alternatives and a fixation on political output, this question is hardly asked anymore. Tom Kühnel and Jürgen Kuttner pick up the spade, strip back the layers and go in search of the ideological continents of the past – in search of traces of the future.
