"Could you say to a child of yours, ‘you’ve seen the sunlight for the last time’ / Can you do it Henry? / I shall have to, shan’t I? He’s here."
The English royal house in the year 1183. The heir to the throne has died. Although still in good shape, Henry II needs to decide who will now inherit his throne in order to hold the country together. He gathers his family together: his three sons Richard, Geoffrey and John, as well as Eleanor of Aquitaine, mother of the three boys, who he has let out of prison for the occasion. The king’s current mistress, the princess of France, and the young French King Philipp also want to have a say in the matter. Every minute pacts are being made, alliances are being formed or broken, schemes are being devised and revised. Callous, ruthless, and darkly comic, The Lion in Winter is a tale of power politics and political and familial intrigue...
