A spa resort as the scene for a battle between deceleration and turbo capitalism. Under threat from investors who wish to turn the spa into a wellness temple for well-heeled customers, Hannes the lifeguard goes on the rampage. By way of a massive sauna steam offensive and guerrilla tactics, he tries to prevent this systemic change via an underground operation. The guests are turned into spa hostages and the exits are barricaded. The establishment, personified by the spa management, reacts by flooding the baths: the subversive vermin has to be flushed out of hiding and revealed in the light of day. And the death of civilian guests by drowning in the process is chalked up as an inevitability. These then gather to form a chorus of the marooned. Their revolutionary consciousness is awakened – but will it be sufficient for thermal resistance?
Ferdinand Schmalz relocates the ideological war of world views to a place least of all associated with political awareness and undermining the system. Yet it is the site of a budding "sauna movement" that tries to turn the dream of independent self-rule into reality.
