Unbearably Long Embrace (Unerträglich lange Umarmung)
by Ivan Vyrypaev
"The world is a pearl in a pile of shit, Lore."
from ‘Drunkards.’
Ivan Vyrypaev, born in 1974 in Siberia and one of the most exciting contemporary Russian dramatists, deals with fundamental themes such as death, life and empathy in his plays, as well as issues of individual and social values, and their flux. His past theatre plays have broached the issue of the conceptual duality of truth and lies, and their incorporeality; in ‘Betrunkene’ (Drunkards), he depicts the collision of the inebriated with the promiscuous. Form-conscious, powerfully eloquent and poetic at the same time, Vyrypaev wavers between tragedy and comedy as he plays with the dissolution of all certainties. Andrea Moses, a director of opera and theatre, is staging Ivan Vyrypaev’s commissioned play for the Deutsches Theater.
