An adaptation by Nora Schlocker and Birgit Lengers
It begins with a pact: to take care of Frieder, who has made a suicide attempt, Hoeppner moves with him into an empty house in the middle of the village. Responsibility for their mutual friend is shared between Vera, who doesn’t believe in exclusivity when it comes to either love or property, and Cecilia, who refuses to inherit her rich parents’ lifestyle. Completing the flat-share of headstrong individuals is the beautiful arsonist Pauline and gay stoner Harry.
Life in Auerhaus – named after the Madness song, Our House – is a protest against the predictable rat race of "birth, school, boom bang, work, death". But it’s also practice in real life – they get up, steal food, cook, play badminton, throw parties and most of all, they talk: they talk to save Frieder’s life. Bound by this common promise, the six head towards 'A' levels and an uncertain future, sometimes living the daily routine, sometimes escaping it. They have the time of their lives. But one day, it will come to an end...
Auerhaus tells the story of a community utopia and that precarious moment of growing up, when life comes knocking and decisions can't be put off. Nothing is left out: friendship and love, present and future, life and death.
