Birgit Unterweger

Birgit Unterweger, born in Linz, trained as an actor at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Her first professional acting experience was in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream (Ein Sommernachtstraum) directed by Leander Haußmann at the Salzburg Festival. From 1997 to 2000 she was engaged at the Deutsches Nationaltheater in Weimar. From 2000 to 2008 she was a member of the ensemble at Theater Dortmund. In 2003 she was voted best up-and-coming actress at the NRW Theatertreffen. From 2006 to 2008 she was a guest actress at the Deutsches Theater Berlin and worked there with Philipp Preuss and Christoph Mehler. From 2008 to 2013 she was engaged at the Centraltheater Leipzig, where she worked with Sebastian Hartmann, Sebastian Baumgarten, Jürgen Kruse, Armin Petras, Martin Laberenz, Viktor Bodó and Schorsch Kamerun, among others. She was invited to the Theatertreffen 2013 in Berlin with the production of Krieg und Frieden (War and Peace) directed by Sebastian Hartmann. In 2013/2014 she was in the ensemble of the Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar and from 2014 to 2017 in the ensemble of Schauspiel Stuttgart. There she worked with Christoph Rüping and Robert Borgmann, among others, and taught at the university in Stuttgart. She has been a member of the Deutsches Theater ensemble since the start of the 2017/18 season.
