Jette Steckel

Jette Steckel was born in Berlin in 1982. From 2003 to 2007 Steckel studied theatre direction in Hamburg and audited courses at GITIS, the Russian University of Theatre Arts in Moscow. She staged Darja Stocker’s Nightblind at the Thalia in der Gaußstraße in 2006. For this production Steckel was named "Most Promising Young Director of 2007" by the trade magazine Theater heute and received invitations to numerous festivals. She also mounted productions of Saved by Edward Bond and The New Sufferings of Young W. by Ulrich Plenzdorf. Jette Steckel won the Gertrud Eysoldt Young Directors’ Award for Saved in 2008 and was invited to the "Radikal jung" young directors’ festival at Munich’s Volkstheater. She works regularly at Cologne’s Schauspiel and the Thalia Theater Hamburg. Steckel’s first Deutsches Theater production was Caligula by Albert Camus, staged in the DT Box. In 2009, this production was also invited to "Radikal Jung" at the Volkstheater in Munich – and won the festival prize. Since then Jette Steckel has regularly directed at the Deutsches Theater Berlin. In the 2018/19 season she directed the co-production with the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen Before Dawn from Ewald Palmetshofer based on the play by Gerhart Hauptmann in the Kammerspiele and Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates in the Deutsches Theater.
