Ilya Shagalov
Ilya Shagalov was born in Krasnodar, Russia, and initially studied acting at the State Academy of Arts and Culture in his home town. He then studied theatre directing with Kirill Serebrennikov at the theatre school of the Moscow Chekhov Artistic Theatre. In addition to his work as a director, he works as a video artist, stage designer and composer. He has directed various theatre projects in Russia and abroad, including Dreams of the Minotaur at the Theatre of Nations Moscow, Near Zero (Nahe Null) by Natan Dubovitsky at the Schaubühne Berlin, My Moscow at the Moscow Gogol Centre, Evgeny Zamyatin's We at the Theatre in Rouen, France, and Venus in the Fur of Sacher-Masoch at the Russian Theatre in Tallinn. From 2013until its closure 2022 Ilya Shagalov has been a permanent member of the Gogol-Center. He has worked closely with Kirill Serebrennikov since his studies and has produced the videos for a number of his productions, including Woyzeck at the National Theatre of Latvia, Salome and Hansel and Gretel at the Stuttgart Opera and Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Komische Oper Berlin.
