Sebastian Hartmann

Sebastian Hartmann was born in 1968 in Leipzig; he went on to study acting for stage and screen at the Hans Otto Drama School. From 1991 to 1993, he was a member of the ensemble at the Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar and in 1993/1994 at the Carrousel Theater in Berlin. From the mid-1990s on, he staged his first productions in the independent theatre scene; in 1998 he founded the ''wehrtheater hartmann''. In 1999, he staged productions at the Theaterhaus Jena, the Tacheles and at the Theater unterm Dach in Berlin. 1999 - 2003 director at the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Berlin; 2001 - 2005 director at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg. In addition, work as a freelance director at the Burgtheater Wien, Theater Basel, Schauspiel Köln, Theater Magdeburg, Schauspiel Frankfurt, NO-Theater Tallinn, as well as at the National Theater Oslo, where he received the Hedda Prize for Best Director and the Oslo Prize for Best Performance in 2005 for his production of John Gabriel Borkmann, and the Hedda Prize again in 2006 for his production of Segen der Erde. 2008 - 2013 artistic director at Schauspiel Leipzig, where he staged numerous productions (including Matthäuspassion, Eines langen Tages Reise in die Nacht, Der Kirschgarten, Paris, Texas [UA], Der Zauberberg, Der Trinker, Krieg und Frieden, mein faust). 2016 Opening of the international Ingmar Bergman Festival with Huset vid Natten Ände. Invitations to the Berlin Theatertreffen: Krieg und Frieden (Centraltheater Leipzig, 2013), Erniedrigte und Beleidigte after Fjodor M. Dostojevski (Staatsschauspiel Dresden, 2019), Der Zauberberg (Deutsches Theater Berlin, 2021) and Der Einzige und sein Eigentum (Deutsches Theater Berlin, 2023).
