Hasta la Westler, Baby!
A German Play with Music
by Tom Kühnel and Jürgen Kuttner
In November 1989, "Zonen-Gaby im Glück" (which roughly translates as "Gaby from East Germany Overjoyed") was the cover line of the satirical magazine Titanic. The photo of a smiling young woman holding a peeled cucumber ("My First Banana") ironically exposed the arrogance of the West-German view of the East. The real joke of the picture, however, only came to light later: because the denim-shirt-wearing woman with the perm wasn’t from Borna, Potsdam or Görlitz, but from Worms in Rhine-Hesse. The picture could in fact be described as a perceptive exposé of how even when it wanted to show its disdain, the West was unwilling to get too close to the East. More than 30 years later, Tom Kühnel and Jürgen Kuttner turn the history of the German reunification on its head: offensive, loud, funny and below the belt. And with lots of music.
