karpatenflecken
by Thomas Perle
Three women from the same part of the Carpathian Mountains but three different generations meet in Thomas Perle’s 2019 Retzhofer Drama Prize-winning play: a daughter, mother and grandmother. In various languages and dialects, they recount their German-Austrian-Hungarian-Romanian biographies and fates which are embedded in the political ructions and stories of violence over the centuries. In succinctly precise dialogue, Perle unfolds a great historical arc from German immigration to the region during the 18th century to National Socialism, the fall of Ceaușescu and the longing for a different life in the West. And the mountains and forests also have their say.
