Sophie Rois
Sophie Rois, born in Linz, studied acting at the Max-Reinhardt-Seminar in Vienna. First engagements took her to Berlin, initially to the Renaissance Theater and the Schillertheater. From 1993 to 2017 she was a member of the ensemble of the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. Sophie Rois collaborated with the director Frank Castorf, as well as with René Pollesch, over the course of many years. Sophie Rois was ceremoniously awarded the Gertrud-Eysoldt-Ring on 17 March 2018 for her role as the witch in the Volksbühne production of Faust. Part Two. The jury praised "her commitment over many years to ensemble theatre at the Volksbühne in Berlin" and praised the actress for her "professionalism, integrity and great sense of humour". Sophie Rois has also acted in many cinema and TV films. For her leading role in the film Three (director: Tom Tykwer) she received several awards, including the German Film Award 2011 for Best Leading Role. Furthermore, Sophie Rois has received many other awards and accolades for her performances in theatre, film, TV and audio dramas, including the Grimm Prize for her role as Erika Mann in the TV miniseries Die Manns – Ein Jahrhundertroman, and twice the German Audiobook Prize in the category "Best Interpretation" for the audiobook Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë 2006 and 2016 for Baba Dunja’s Last Love by Alina Bronsky. She has also been awarded the prestigious Theatre Prize Berlin of the Stiftung Preußische Seehandlung. Sophie Rois was an ensemble member of the Deutsches Theater Berlin until the 2021/22 season, after which she moved back to the Volksbühne Berlin.
