AWARDED WITH THE THEATER PRIZE DER FAUST 2022
In an adaption by Liesbeth Coltof and Birgit Lengers
"But I, I will live, for I am young. Inside me, everything is possible."
An island. Endless water, rocks, a village, a monastery. There is no stream, only the moon, the sun and a thousand eyes. There is the eternal rhythm of nature, a book of faith and the stake for the disobedient. The men are in charge and make the laws. It is a closed system.
A girl grows up here, a foundling with no origin, no mother and no name. Different from the others. She is not allowed to read, not allowed to swim, not allowed to marry. She narrates her miroloi (Greek for "speech about destiny") in 128 stanzas. A lament and a song about love, about the courage to rebel. It is the story of an outsider who questions an entire system and is willing to pay a high price for it.
Dutch director and FAUST Award winner Liesbeth Coltof tells this stirring and poetic story of emancipation with a diverse ensemble. The roles of the main characters Alina and Yael are taken by different players:inside, as it is a tale of many that could be set in any place and time.
Note: Sexual violence against women is depicted in this production.
