Marseille, summer 1940: a flood of refugees has gathered on the edge of the continent. Thousands of people are seeking a way out of Europe, chasing after visas and transits, desperately hoping to land one of the few places of passage overseas. Among them, a young German: having fled from a labour camp in Rouen, kitted out with forged papers, he becomes stranded in the harbour town. There, he falls in love with Marie. But she is looking for her husband from whom she was separated in the German invasion of Paris. Seghers impressively depicts the chaos, the waiting, the hope and the desperation of the refugees – the degrading state of transit that today remains a bitter reality for millions of people.
