Amir Reza Koohestani
Amir Reza Koohestani was born in 1978 in Shiraz, Iran and is considered one of the most important Iranian directors and playwrights of his generation. After his experience as a filmmaker, he staged his play DANCE ONGLASSES with the Mehr Theatre Group in Tehran, which has been acclaimed internationally in 2002. After two years of study in Manchester, Koohestani returned to Tehran, where he still writes, develops and shows his plays. Formore than fifteen years Koohestani's plays such as TIMELOSS, IWANOW (based on Anton Tschechow), HEARING or most recently SUMMERLESS (2019) have been shown at festivals and guest performances all over the world, from the Wiener Festwochen to the Festival d'Avignon to New York and Tokyo. Koohestani has staged several productions at German theatres. At the Münchner Kammerspiele he adopted on stage Kamel Daoud's novel THE MEURSAULT INVESTIGATION (season 16/17), Yasmina Khadra's THE ATTACK (season 17/18) and most recently Shakespeares' MACBETH(18/19). At the beginning of 2017 Koohestani realized his first opera with TANNHÄUSER at the Staatstheater Darmstadt. At Theater Freiburg Koohestani staged an adaption of Chekhov's THE CHERRY ORCHARD (17/18) and a production of Wesker's THE KITCHEN (18/19). The production of Heiner Müller's PHILOKTET is Koohestani's first work in Berlin and at Deutsches Theater.
