Jossi Wieler was born in Kreuzlingen (Switzerland) and studied directing at the Theatre Department of Tel Aviv University. He has worked as a theatre director in Heidelberg, Bonn, Stuttgart, Basel, Hamburg, Zurich, Berlin, at the Münchner Kammerspiele and repeatedly at the Salzburger Festspiele. He has staged works by Elfriede Jelinek on several occasions, and in 1994 he was voted Director of the Year for his production of Jelinek's Wolken.Heim. His theatre works have received numerous invitations to national and international festivals. In 2002 he received the Konrad Wolf Prize from the Berlin Academy of the Arts, in 2005 the German Critics' Prize and in 2009 the Nestroy Prize for his production of Rechnitz (Der Würgeengel) by Elfriede Jelinek. This work as well as Amphitryon by Heinrich von Kleist (1986, Schauspielhaus Bonn), Alkestis by Euripides (2002) and Mittagswende by Paul Claudel (2005, both Münchner Kammerspiele) were invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen. Jossi Wieler has also been directing opera since 1994, primarily in Stuttgart and together with Sergio Morabito. Ariadne auf Naxos (2001, Salzburg Festival), Doktor Faust (2005, co-production San Francisco/Stuttgart), Alceste and Die Nachtwandlerin (2006 and 2012, both Oper Stuttgart) were each honoured as Performance of the Year. In 2002, Wieler and Morabito were voted Directing Team of the Year and received the theatre prize DER FAUST (category Best Opera Direction) in 2006 and 2012. Jossi Wieler was Artistic Director of Oper Stuttgart from 2011 to 2018. In 2020, he was awarded the Grand Prix Theatre / Hans Reinhart Ring, the highest theatre award in Switzerland.
