Musical, grand opera, socially critical pamphlet, song recital, morning, noon, and night until the new day dawns. For five or six theater madmen and a clever pianist.

A sperm whale is not a small animal. 100 tons of oil, meat, and fat—unacceptable for regular stage operations. But theater people are inventive. For our grand opera Der Gesang des Pottwals (The Song of the Sperm Whale), we therefore invented a whole new venue. Open air, making it accessible even for marine mammals. Because without a sperm whale, there is no opera.

So an orchestra pit is dug behind the Deutsches Theater. An arena is built under the stars. Verona. Melodies for millions. Choirs, extra choirs, additional choirs, fishermen's choirs. The merchant and Netrebko, at least! Water basins and fountains on stage, fire, pyrotechnics, and 20 tons of German sewage sludge... what was that for again?

Heiner Bomhard is a director and composer. At the DT, he was most recently a performer in and musical mastermind behind the two cult musicals Hitler's Goat and the King's Hemorrhoids and The Island of the Perverse. With The Song of the Sperm Whale, Bomhard is now moving into the serious opera genre. It will be tragic. And dramatic. And uplifting in all its creatureliness. Sperm whale's honor.

E dalle onde si erge

possente e potente una creatura

più grande di tutte le altre.

O mondo! Come hai potuto creare un essere simile!

And from the floods rises

Mighty and powerful, a creature

Greater than anything else.

O world! How could you have created such a creature!
