Hope Foster is a successful real estate agent. Her job is to find people a home and a place of security. Years ago, in a moment of carelessness, she lost her child while he was playing. Since then, her life has been overshadowed by tragic twists of fate and questions of guilt.

While showing an apartment, she meets a young couple, Margaret and Will. She befriends Margaret, who soon sets her future life on a different course. Shortly thereafter, she meets Will's father, a discarded Latin teacher in whom Hope finds support and comfort. His life, too, is marked by loss. Then there are security consultant Jerry and neighbor Donna. All of them are stranded and marked by life, coming together in a kind of community of fate in a time of homelessness. Is there hope in times of great life crises? Is there life after shipwreck? And can toast heal wounds?

Noah Haidle, an award-winning playwright and screenwriter whose works have been performed on Broadway, in the US, and worldwide, has created a great play about what we call life: about friendship, late love, and deep pain. After The Homemaker and Birthday Candle at the Deutsches Theater, director Anna Bergmann is staging a world premiere by Noah Haidle for the third time.
