Wetten, dass..? was more than just an entertainment programme for decades: it was a Saturday-night ritual across West Germany that brought together provincial folk and global celebrities, local clubs and Hollywood, excavator bets and pop star appearances on the same sofa for a few hours. The programme thrived on the premise that everyone could watch it at the same time – families, groups of friends, entire generations. Its appeal lay not only in the bets, but in the simultaneity: the shared sense of wonder, vicarious embarrassment and retelling of the stories.

As linear television lost its significance, Wetten, dass..? also lost its true power. What used to be a national event increasingly became a programme of nostalgia. The show could still fill venues, invite stars and present spectacular bets, but the promise of creating a shared present for one evening began to crumble. It did not simply end because nobody was watching any more, but because the media landscape that had sustained it had disappeared. Saturday evening, when Germany used to watch itself marvelling, became an evening when it remembered having once marvelled together.
