Vita
Alexander Eisenach, born in Berlin, is an author and director. His plays are characterized by the intertwining of different time and narrative levels, thus always addressing the inextricable simultaneity of seemingly separate issues. In his productions, play and gesture question concepts of utilization by always functioning as excessive self-invention.
Eisenach studied theater studies and German language and literature in Leipzig and Paris before joining the Centraltheater Leipzig as an assistant director. In the 2013/14 season, he was a member of the Regiestudio at Schauspiel Frankfurt. In 2014, his first play, Das Leben des Joyless Pleasure (The Life of Joyless Pleasure), premiered there. Since then, he has worked as a freelance director at Schauspiel Hannover, where he was resident director from 2016 to 2019, Schauspiel Frankfurt, Deutsches Theater Berlin, and Berliner Ensemble, among others. He was awarded the 2016 Kurt Hübner Directing Prize for the production of his play Der kalte Hauch des Geldes (The Cold Breath of Money). The plays Der Kaiser von Kalifornien (The Emperor of California) and Anthropos, Tyrann (Ödipus) (Anthropos, Tyrant (Oedipus)) were created at the Volksbühne Berlin. At the Residenztheater Munich, where he has been resident director since the 2023/24 season, he has staged Götz von Berlichingen and the world premiere of St. Falstaff by Ewald Palmetshofer, among others.
His texts are published by Rowohlt Theaterverlag.
