In 2019, author Caren Jeß published her dramatic compendium Bookpink, a collection of seven miniatures about human abysses, social structures, and societal debates, whose protagonists were birds. After the ATT Atelier 2024, the Bookpink universe continues to grow—Caren Jeß introduces the new arrivals in the bird world, which is all too similar to our own: full of power fantasies, fragile orders, and the strange disappearance of imagination.

There is the eagle who despises his chick. A mother without a female form, but with a strict worldview: strength counts, weakness damages one's reputation. So off with the little “wayward” son to the reserve for conspicuous species. New eggs, new hope, old harshness.

Then there is Mrs. Pétain, a lively female hummingbird who wants to be sterilized so she can determine her own life. But the procedure fails—and the medical wren thinks that's just fine.

And Nikki the canary: bright yellow, trapped in an aviary that looks more like a pretty cage than a home. Her human, Cord, is dying, the room a kaleidoscope of glass and light. At the window, the chiffchaff waits for the moment when the door opens and Nikki might sing again.

Bookpink: New Arrivals is an evening about power, care, imagination – and what happens when you take birds too seriously. Or just seriously enough.
