Following his father’s death, Edward II has become heir to the throne of England. But instead of dedicating himself to the state and its affairs, Edward calls his lover Galveston to his side from exile and showers him with attention, desire and love – antagonising the nobility, the state, the church and his own wife, Queen Isabella. Isabella turns to Lord Mortimer and they hatch a plan. The peers of the high nobility fuel their machinations in the hope that politics and state will return to what they consider to be their rightful order. And meanwhile, the military threat from France looms ever larger.

The Austrian dramatist Ewald Palmetshofer has rewritten and trimmed Christopher Marlowe’s posthumously published royal drama, condensing it in his own radically poetic language. He transfers the battlefield from the historical context to a private one and posits love as an absolute.

In the opening production of the venue Box, director Jessica Weisskirchen looks at questions of masculinity, love and power. What is the value of love? What does it mean to radically oppose the authority of the state and religion with one’s own desire? And up to which point should you fight for love? A net made of intrigue, interests, power, uncompromising violence and defeat is spun in Edward II. Die Liebe bin ich, and a young prince will come to power in the end.
