synopsis
Mrs. Adam, an adept restaurant owner, operates a vending machine buffet. Despite all the modern conveniences — food, drinks, and music are available at the touch of a button — this means spreading bread rolls, pouring beer, and being on her feet from morning until midnight. Her husband Leopold, a dreamer, is not much help to her. Instead of helping in the business, he sits by the fishing pond and devises a theoretically good solution for supplying the needy population with inexpensive protein in the form of farmed carp.
One day, while fishing, he pulls a young woman who is attempting suicide out of the water, takes her home, and things start to happen. The young woman, Eva, helps out as a waitress and not only turns out to be a magnet for increasing sales in the vending machine buffet, which is both a source of joy and a thorn in the side of the boss, but also helps the social visionary to present his business idea to the city's dignitaries, who are initially dismissive but then become increasingly interested.
Austrian author Anna Gmeyner wrote Automatenbüfett in 1932, at a time of epochal change: “Europe is a powder keg that could be ignited at any moment,” the play says. Despite the explosive nature of its historical background, the play is a loving portrait of the so-called little (and also very poor) people who muddle through with diligence, mother wit, and cunning, yet never lose their sense of humor or optimism. In the end, of course, everything goes wrong, but one thing is certain: lust and love will remain.
